A Product I’m Currently Designing: Function Overview and Concept

by Kook · June 12, 2025

Although I’ve designed several small electronic devices in the past, none of them have ever made it to the market or been publicly released. After reflecting on the failures of those earlier projects, I’ve realized that the biggest issue was that the products were simply too complex—far beyond what I could handle alone across the entire production process.

Having learned from those experiences, I’ve recently set my sights on a new product. This time, my design philosophy is all about simplicity: creating something that can be fully developed, produced, and even sold by me alone, without relying on a team.

Product Name

Bidirectional 1×2 3.5mm Audio Switcher — Compatible with TS, TRS, TRRS Audio Jacks

As the name suggests, its function is straightforward: it’s simply an audio signal switcher. The design is intentionally simple, the internal circuitry is not complicated, and the overall size is very compact. Most importantly, every step of production and assembly can be handled by me alone.

Let me first describe the functionality it offers.

Product Overview

The Bidirectional 1×2 3.5mm Audio Switcher is a compact and versatile solution for routing analog audio signals between devices. Designed with universal compatibility in mind, it supports TS (mono), TRS (stereo), and TRRS (microphone-equipped) 3.5mm audio plugs, making it ideal for a wide range of applications including headphones, speakers, microphones, PCs, mobile devices, game consoles, and more.

Whether you want to switch between two audio sources to one output device, or share one audio source with two different output devices (one at a time), this switcher delivers reliable performance with minimal signal loss and no need for power.

Although similar products already exist on the market, I believe that if I’m going to build something myself, it should have its own unique strengths and stand out in some way.

Key Features

Bidirectional Switching:

Supports 2-in-1-out or 1-in-2-out switching modes. Easily toggle between devices using a physical switch.

Wide Compatibility:

Works seamlessly with all types of 3.5mm plugs – TS (mono), TRS (stereo), and TRRS (with microphone).

Ultra-Low Power Switching:

This switcher is powered by an internal battery, no external power supply required. It only uses power during switching, and no energy is consumed during normal use. This design ensures long battery life while maintaining the convenience of silent, reliable switching.

One-Touch Mute Function:

Includes a dedicated mute button that allows you to instantly silence the audio signal with a single press — perfect for meetings, live streams, or unexpected interruptions.

High-Quality Signal Transfer:

Gold-plated (or Silver-plated) connectors ensure stable signal transmission and minimize audio degradation.

Compact & Durable:

Built with a robust housing for portability and long-lasting use.

Conclusion

This is the product I’m currently conceptualizing and designing. I’ve been working on it for about three months, and while it’s not yet complete, the prototype is already mostly built. In the coming weeks — hopefully within the next one to two months — I plan to finalize the full implementation.

Moving forward, I’ll be documenting and sharing this interesting journey here on the blog.
